This little offering is a bit
odd. It was my first gig with the band, at Bradford St. George's Hall on
June 10th 1985. We were headlining the second night of three, I believe,
which was billed as an indie night or some such, featuring a lot of bands
from the areas around the city, such as Skeletal Family. John Moule, a
former student of Bradford Uni and a friend of the band, offered to film it
for posterity. As he was on a student budget, he couldn't swing enough cash
to edit the whole gig, so he did extracts, managing to string together about
five songs. We finished with an awful version of You'll Never Walk Alone,
the charity single which Robert had appeared on with other Bradford bands
and a bunch of luvvies. Moule dragged himself onto stage to lead the
singing, but was so nervous beforehand he was absolutely paralytic. As more
people ended up on stage, the audience began to join in. This meant most of
the gear getting trodden on and unplugged, whilst our guest vocalist took
the song in directions not known to any previously rehearsed arrangement.
The whole thing is embarrassingly bad, but was fun at the time, and often
remembered by those who were there. We all went along the next night,
returning to the scene of the crime as it were, and watched, among others,
The Nolans, Black Lace and Smokie, representing the more traditional music
to come out of the city. |
